Some people in West Virginia have trouble with all those 'shalls' and 'shall not's' in the Ten
commandments. Folks just aren't used to talking in those terms.. So, some folks in West
Virginia got together and translated the 'King James' into 'County' language..... read on...
The Hillbilly's Ten Commandments (posted on the wall at First Baptist Church in
Summersville , West Virginia )
(1) Just one God
(2) Put nothin' before God
(3) Watch yer mouth
(4) Git yourself to Sunday meetin'
(5) Honor yer Ma & Pa
(6) No killin'
(7) No foolin' around with another fellow's gal
(8) Don't take what ain't yers
(9) No tellin' tales or gossipin'
(10) Don't be hankerin' for yer buddy's stuff
Now that's kinda plain an' simple, don't ya think?
Ruth Mooney, Peggy Scharff Petrich, Ruth Atkins and K. Almond
What a wonderful experience two women from our church recently had at the annual
Methodist Women's Spiritual Growth Retreat. Ruth Atkins and Ruth Mooney attended the
two-day event held Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18 at Cedar Lakes, near Ripley.
They were there with over 183 women from across our conference. Another group would
come in for Saturday and Sunday's retreat.
This year's theme was, "To know God is to be Bible Women." Rev. Peggy Scharff Petrich
and Rev. K. Almond were the program instructors. They gave a different and new
introduction to Naomi and Ruth, Hannah and Mary. The question we were to ask
ourselves was, how are these women "beatitude women"?
Throughout the two days, singing, fellowship and prayer were in abundance. We were
reminded that when Jesus prayed, he prayed the Psalms. If we want to pray to God like
Jesus did, then we too should pray the Psalms. One such verse was spiritually uplifting:
"As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee, O God" (Psalm
42:1).
The instructors also suggested the women at the retreat keep spiritual journals. One
day, it may serve as a testimony for another (maybe a descendant.
The photo shows three women who all have the name "Ruth" in common. Peggy's middle
name is "Ruth" and K's mother and sister both have the first name "Ruth."
Perhaps next year we can take carloads of women from Christ Church U.M.!

Matthew 5: 1-9** The Message,
rendering by Eugene H. Peterson
When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed
a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed,
climbed with him. arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and
taught his climbing companions. This is what he said:
"You are blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With
less of you there is more of God and God's rule.
You are blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to
you.
Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
You are blessed when you're content with just who you are--no
more, no
less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of
everything
that cannot be bought.
You are blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for
God.
God is food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat.
*
You are blessed when you care. At the moment of being
'care-full,' you find yourselves cared for.
You are blessed when you get your inside world--your mind and
heart--put right. Then you can see god in the outside world.
*
You are blessed when you can show people how to cooperate
instead of*compete or fight. That's when you discover who you
really are*and your place in God's family."
